Justice Nahel
Paris, France, 2023
After the tragic death of Nahel Merzouk, a 17-year-old shot by police in a Paris suburb, protests broke out across the city, demanding justice. When the protests ended, traces of the unrest remained — graffiti, damaged property, and other signs of frustration were still visible before they were eventually cleaned away. I captured these images during the brief period when the city’s streets still carried the marks of the protests and the emotions of the people.
“Nahel Merzouk was a 17-year-old enrolled at the Lycée Louis-Blériot in Suresnes, where he attended classes for six months before dropping out and working as a pizza delivery driver in Nanterre. He did not have a driving license allowing him to drive the rented Mercedes he died in.”
