Sophiline Cheam Shapiro

Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 2003

Sophiline Cheam Shapiro is an acclaimed choreographer and master of Cambodian classical dance, known for revitalizing traditional dance dramas while also pioneering contemporary innovations. I first encountered her work in 2003 when I watched Othello performed in Phnom Penh. After reaching out to her, she graciously allowed me to photograph her.

These portraits were taken at the former Royal University of Fine Arts performing arts campus, located in the northern part of Phnom Penh.
