STREET PHOTOGRAPHY IN PAKISTAN

Lahore, Pakistan, 2003

In 2003, I traveled with my husband to Pakistan and a Contax 645 camera. while there I hoped to capture some of the life on the streets of Lahore. With the guidance of a local NGO, I explored areas typically considered dangerous — places with brothels and street workers. But I never felt at risk. The people I encountered were open and curious, much like I was. I was nervous only because I was worried they would be upset or offended by me and my oversized camera.

After leaving Lahore, we journeyed to a hill station in the Himalayas, where the colder temperatures had everyone bundled in layers of clothing. Hot chai, served at breakfast and throughout the day, became a comforting ritual. Despite the strange looks we received at first, the people were warm and welcoming, allowing me to capture intimate, unguarded portraits.
